Specialized Evaluations
All of our evaluations are related to assistive technology (AT) products, services and ergonomics. O.T. and P.T. evaluations must be performed by certified professionals. The following list outlines specialized assistive technology evaluations that involve considerations beyond a general AT eval.
- Worksite Evaluations. Worksite evaluations include everything in a general AT eval but also include a detailed analysis of workplace computer systems, databases, and general job requirements. Please see the "Worksite Evaluation Details" section below.
- Higher Education Evaluations. Our primary focus during higher education evaluations is to make sure that clients have access to the programs and tools used within their degree program. Please see the "Educational Evaluation Details" section below.
- K-12 Evaluations. We try to simplify assistive technology as much as possible for K-12 students and special education teachers. We'll usually develop different training plans for each student based on the severity and nature of the learning disability involved. Please see the "K-12 Evaluation Details" section below.
- Home Control Evaluations. The primary purpose of home control evaluations is to examine the electrical wiring, layout, and installation complications of the home. We also assess the client's ability to control devices through speech and various switch alternatives. Please see the "Home Control Evaluation Details" section below.
Worksite Evaluation Details
- Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the client's job functions, paying special attention to difficult work demands.
- Examine the technical capabilities/limitations of company systems, including shared database programs, proprietary software programs, and current hardware systems.
- Examine computer access, paper workflow, and operational obligations of the client's position and identify assistive technologies that might help wherever possible.
- Work with supervisors and IT staff members to develop a technology plan. When appropriate, train IT employees to troubleshoot and service assistive technology products. When necessary, work with employers to adjust job responsibilities so that the client's position suits the limitations/capabilities of the technologies.
Higher-Education Evaluation Details
- Examine the content of required computer courses, and identify the software, hardware, and skills necessary for scholastic success.
- Assess textbook accessibility, research material accessibility, study environment challenges, and course-specific challenges that can often be addressed through other computer technologies.
- To compensate for disability-related challenges, clients often need to obtain computer expertise beyond what their college classes provide. Common topics include electronic organization and recordkeeping training; conceptual-level MS Office training; and computer integrity, security, and internet training.
K-12 Evaluation Details
- As most special education (SPED) teachers know, each student's learning disability is different. In our K-12 evaluations, we work with SPED departments to assess the severity of the student's learning disability, any attention/focus difficulties, and reading/writing challenges.
- K-12 evaluations primarily provide us with specific observations and data so that we can customize our training plans for each student's unique challenges. It helps us avoid formulaic training approaches that are proven to be less effective.
- Our primary K-12 specialties include all types of dyslexia, dysgraphia, severe ADD, and ADHD. We also frequently work with students who have computer access difficulties attributable to nervous system or muscular disorders.
