LD General Info
Adaptive Technologies trains people with all types of learning disabilities and brain injuries from 12 to 70 years old. In fact, we train clients with learning disabilities more than any other segment of the disabled population. Specific learning disabilities include dyslexia, dysgraphia (difficulty in writing coherently), attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and brain injuries affecting retention and cognition. We highly encourage an evaluation before proceeding with any LD case but demand it for all cases involving ADHD or brain injuries. The varying degrees of severity among ADHD and brain injury clients make training preparation/planning impossible without an evaluation.
Typical Adaptations and Training Areas
-
LD Speech Recognition Training
Speech recognition software is the best tool available for people with writing disabilities. Many people with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and cognitive brain injuries face significant challenges when attempting even small writing assignments. Speech recognition can make the entire writing process manageable and even enjoyable. LD speech recognition training is slightly different from basic training because we emphasize word correction and homonym selection functions – two crucial tools for people with writing disabilities.
-
Text-to-Speech Software Training
Adaptive Technologies trains clients on all three primary text-to-speech programs – TextHELP Read&Write Gold, Kurzweil 3000, and WYNN Wizard. All quality text-to-speech programs offer the same core tools: text reading with highlighting, webpage reading with highlighting, ability to scan and read printed materials, advanced dyslexia spell check, and homonym selection support. Our dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD services often involve customized training plans that establish a strong fundamental understanding of these important tools. As mentioned previously, the number of training hours varies significantly depending on the type and severity of the disability. We also customize the training plan depending on the client's reading, writing, and spelling test scores.
-
Graphic-to-Text Software Training
Graphic-to-text software helps clients construct a hierarchy of relationships between pictures to generate ideas and plan projects. Once arranged these graphics can be converted to text in an outline format. Graphic-to-text tools are also often useful for clients with severe learning disabilities because output is image oriented. Most of Adaptive Technologies graphic-to-text software training is targeted towards individuals who have difficulty organizing their thoughts using text-based tools such as handwritten lists and flowcharts.
Dyslexia and Dysgraphia in Higher Ed
Most people with mild forms of dyslexia and dysgraphia learn to overcome disability-related challenges in middle school or high school. However, more severe forms of dyslexia and dysgraphia will remain a challenge throughout college and professional life.
