Do you train clients with visual impairments?
Some clients with learning disabilities or physical disabilities also have visual impairments. Consequently, accommodations for these clients sometimes include ZoomText Magnifier or ZoomText Magnifier/Reader. However, Adaptive Technologies doesn’t specifically cater to the blind/low vision market. As of December 2007, we do not provide JAWS or Window Eyes training.
-
What types of physical disabilities do you work with?
Adaptive Technologies has been accommodating quadriplegics and people with physical disabilities since the mid-1990s. Physical disabilities and learning disabilities are our main areas of expertise. We have extensive experience accommodating clients with upper extremity amputations, moderate or severe shrapnel wounds, multiple sclerosis, ALS, partial/full neck breaks, and many other neuromuscular or autoimmune disorders that affect muscle control.
-
What do your brain injury trainings typically involve?
Each training is vastly different and depends on the area of the brain affected and the extent of the injury. The evaluation phase is significantly more detailed for clients with brain injuries and medical/psychological reports are extremely helpful. When training clients with brain injuries, we frequently spend considerable time developing procedures and habits that simplify processes and help clients form mnemonic links to lesson content. We also often train them on technologies and procedures that aid short-term memory in daily life.
-
Is general computer training necessary every time?
No, many cases only require assistive technology training. Assistive technology training is always our #1 priority when training disabled clients. However, one of the benefits of evaluating clients beforehand is determining if the clients are missing valuable computer skills. Many times, the frustrations many disabled clients have when operating a computer relate to general computer skills more than assistive technologies. Also, ensuring clients have general computer skills is extremely helpful to vocational counselors who are attempting to locate jobs involving computer work.
-
Will you train clients without an evaluation?
Beginning cases with an evaluation is our standard practice and a standard practice within the industry. There are simply too many problems inherent to assistive technologies and the disability market to train clients without a prior evaluation. We will train clients on technologies purchased from other companies (assuming they’re not odd technologies and we’re familiar with them). However, we cannot initiate any assistive technology training without an evaluation. Evaluations exist to assess the existing technologies and knowledge of the client. Within the disability market, evaluations are crucial to achieving higher success rates because each disabled client has different challenges.
-
Where do you offer training services?
We offer training services in Colorado along the Rocky Mountain front range as far south as Pueblo and as far north as Fort Collins. Our normal service area is two hours or less from south Denver. Because of the time and expense involved with travel, we must charge for travel without exception. Most of our clients are located in Colorado Springs and metro Denver.
-
To avoid a travel fee, can client’s come to you?
Because much of the disabled population has difficulty traveling, we have always focused on on-site service. There is also a significant advantage in training clients on their own machines at their own workstations. For example, if we train clients on location, we can address technology issues immediately during training. We can also witness and address environmental factors and other distractions that might be causing problems. For these reasons, we only train clients at their location.
