Medical IT Services

Overview

Adaptive Technologies has provided medical IT consulting services since the mid-1990s. Originally established to install, train, and support physicians on speech recognition, our medical consulting services have expanded to include design and implementation of custom MS Office forms, general computer technology training/support, and computer workstation adaptations within medical laboratories. In most cases, these services are all offered as part of a larger speech recognition implementation plan.

All of our medical consulting services exist for the sole purpose of making SOAP-note dictation and general patient recordkeeping as affordable, fast, and simple as possible for physicians.

Speech Recognition Solutions

Adaptive Technologies was one of the first companies to offer speech recognition training for the medical market in the 1990s. Since then, technological advances have led to widespread adoption of Dragon NaturallySpeaking throughout the medical market.

Speech recognition can be an immensely useful tool for improving patient recordkeeping and minimizing/eliminating transcription service overhead. However, Nuance (the company that manufactures Dragon NaturallySpeaking), national distributors of speech recognition and EMR products, and small value added resellers such as Adaptive Technologies all advise against implementing medical speech recognition solutions without professional training and assistance. (This is why Nuance certifies and recommends VARs before implementing speech recognition within a medical or legal practice.)

Both Nuance and VARs nationwide commonly receive calls from frustrated health care professionals who do not have the necessary hardware or training to be successful. In every case, their frustrations could have been avoided through consultation with an experienced, certified VAR such as Adaptive Technologies.

What To Expect

We begin all consultations with a Medical IT Evaluation to learn about existing office systems and practices. Then, we provide a quote with detailed product/training recommendations that suit your practice’s needs. In some cases, recommendations only involve basic training, various speech recognition products, and SOAP-Note template development. However, many practices require computer upgrades/servicing, general computer training for one or more physicians, or more detailed work with an IT staff to implement speech recognition successfully. The cost of an initial implementation depends on the size of a practice and how speech recognition is applied within the larger recordkeeping system.

In a simple application, speech recognition is used dictate patient notes into Microsoft Word and then print and file a hard copy. This is an effective solution for small practices that cannot afford or are uninterested in networked IT solutions or EMR systems.

A more sophisticated application would include the development of customized SOAP note templates and other forms that could be electronically “filled-in” by voice. These templates would include all the necessary fields for a practice’s specialty and would then be saved to a network drive or attached to a patient’s EMR record.

Speech Recognition Software Solutions

At the present time, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical is the best solution available for medical speech recognition. However, we realize that the cost of Dragon Medical can be too high for some practices. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

Dragon’s core speech engine can be combined with 3rd-party vocabulary modules for substantial savings. If you’re interested in this alternative, please let us know during initial consultation. Currently, the following 36 specialty vocabulary modules are available:

All specialty vocabularies include a general medical vocabulary.
