K-12 Student Training Overview

Research by pediatricians and learning specialists support the use of appropriate assistive technologies to provide effective accommodations for students with a broad range of learning disabilities. The appropriate identification and integration of these technologies is essential for the students' educational progress and helps bridge the decoding and attention issues associated with the following disorders:

Multisensory Presentation of material is the key to bridging the decoding issues associated with reading and writing difficulties. We learn primarily through 3 modalities; visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Dyslexia, for example, primarily affects the student's ability to visually decode the phonemes that make up a word. If we were to see a picture of a dog the visual representation would be recognized and we would say "dog". But if we have to decode the phonemes that spell the word "dog" we would first have to separate them. The primary challenge for people with dyslexia is the ability to visually separate the sounds that make up a word and properly reconstruct them.

Importance of an Evaluation

Providing effective electronic accommodations and training to help your students' succeed is our specialty. Before proceeding with any K-12 case, we highly recommend an assistive technology evaluation to examine the specific challenges of the disability, identify beneficial technologies, and generate a custom training plan. The training plan includes working directly with the student on how to integrate these tools into their homework and become empowered to make an immediate and positive impact on their grades. For more information about our evaluation services, please see our assistive technology evaluation webpage.

Challenges Related to Training Minors

As indicated in this website, Adaptive Technologies trains both minors and adults on assistive technology products. However, parents can feel secure knowing that we understand the differences associated with training children. Minors with learning disabilities commonly have additional attention span concerns, special education backgrounds, and immediate coursework challenges. Typically, we're able tailor all of our K-12 Student Trainings to address these challenges after conducting an assistive technology evaluation.

Ongoing Support of Educators

Supporting Educators is vital in communicating the value of using assistive technologies to quickly bridge the issues when professional remediation is unavailable. When the knowledge and experience of professional educators is unavailable assistive technologies provide a bridge allowing the student to effectively keep up in class. Knowing when and how to use these accommodations to support the school's curricula is crucial for the students' success.
