Common Accommodations
- Text-to-Speech Software reads electronic and printed text aloud in a human-like voice. As each word is spoken, it is highlighted to reinforce auditory and visual recognition. Text-to-Speech programs also include a host of reference tools, such as talking dictionaries, a thesaurus, and homonym tools. Text-to-Speech software is often an excellent solution for people with dyslexia and other general reading challenges.
- Speech-to-Text Software allows the student to dictate text directly into a word processor to quickly accomplish often paralyzing written composition tasks. With the proper training students learn how to correct mistakes on the fly using speech feedback and text highlighting as proofreading tools. Speech recognition software is an excellent accommodation for students with dysgraphia, dyslexia, and attention disorders.
- Graphic-to-Text Software allows the student to construct a hierarchy of relationships between pictures to create flowcharts and outlines. This is an excellent tool for sequencing, and critical thinking. Highly visual learners benefit from the use of Graphic-to-Text software. Graphic-to-Text tools are useful for students with a broad range of learning needs.
- Digital Recorders enable the student to record class lectures for later playback and note-taking through summarizing with Speech Recognition software. They can also be used for creating rough drafts for composition tasks. Digital recorders are extremely useful for a broad range of learning challenges.
- MP3 Players and iPods can be used for playback of the scanned text that was saved into an audio file. "Talking Textbooks" could accompany your students' music on his IPOD or MP3 Player. Text-to-Speech programs are required to convert scanned text into an audio format.
